① Digging the poles to be used for gateways for Summer Festival

Hello, again. I am a editor of "NAOKO AU JAPON". This summer, we are going to have a regular festival of Sumiyoshi shrine in Tsukuda, once every 3 years. Before starting the summer fesitival, we have several events for preparation. Then I am going to report about each event and regular summer festival of this year.

From 8:00am on July 5, I went to the Tsukuda canal on which the red colored bridge is built. I have lived in Tsukuda for approximate 10 years, however, it was the first time to look at this event. The working process to dig the poles from the bottom of the canal has not been changed for 360 years since Edo period, except for using a crane truck. When I arrived there at 8 am, approximate 20 men had already started working, and the crane truck had been ready on the red colored bridge. The men continued to dig the soils away with a shovel earnestly. The field supervisor shouted to the young men that their method to use shovel was not correct. Even if they continued to dig soils and put them in the sandbags for more than 1hour, the poles were not been appeared. The poles seemed to sleep depply, so I found for the first time that the work every three years was not easy. The working men didn't have a rest except for drinking waters from the kettle to be passed around. Their bodies were covered with mud and they were struggled to get stuck in the mud sometimes. However, all of them didn't lack vitality at all. When I looked at the scenes that the young men and the veterans work together to keep the traditional process, I felt to see the sight of Tsukuda city in Edo period. When approximate 2 hours passed, some of poles were finally appeared. Then several men got into the water of the canal and they washed the poles with a brush carefully. The poles which were brushed were hoisted by the crane.

The poles pull up on the ground were cleaned up by running waters, and transported to some points where the gateways would be built by the forklift truck. The works by men kept going.

When I went out in the evening, the gateways have alredy been built.
The contrast of the traditional ones and the Seiroka tower is symbol of goodness of Tsukishima. This is Tsukishima which the modern things and traditional things exist together, I always think.

I would like many people to come to see the summer festival of Sumiyoshi shurine. The schedule is as follows.
